John Frederick Malone, 69
John Frederick Malone, 69, died May 6, 2008, in Anchorage of cancer.
Family and friends gathered for a service and wake on May 12 in Anchorage.
Malone was born Feb. 19, 1939, the first of five children to Hortense (Polly) Scholp Malone and John D. Malone in Jersey City, N.J.

He attended high school at St. John Bosco in Elkins, W.Va. In 1957, he graduated from Elkins High School. He spent most of his free time there with the Proudfoots at their farm and family coal mine.

After high school, Malone joined the Army. While in Korea, he studied at the University of Seoul, earning a black belt in karate. He served in the All-Army Pistol Team, winning international awards. He came to Alaska in 1961 when the U.S. Army assigned him to Fort Richardson, where he trained biathlon ski/shooters.

From the Army, Malone joined the state’s first Division of Corrections and then the Alaska State Troopers. He was assigned to Kodiak and the Aleutian Chain before his transfer to Bethel, which was to become his home for the next 40 years.

Malone was a legend, his family said. He was the only law enforcement for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, an area the size of the state of Montana. From Bethel, Malone provided public safety to 52 villages in the area. Malone, state prosecutor Steve Cowper and Judge Nora Guinn delivered “Bush justice” as they tried to be fair and sensitive to the many issues facing Alaska Native people.

In 1970, he and his then-wife Vicki Turner Malone founded Bethel Community Services. The organization provided a multitude of services such as pre-maternal care and a receiving home for abused children. Along with Vicki and his two children, Jason and Rosalie, Malone moved into the newly completed Bautista House, a group home for persons with serious mental illness and developmental disabilities.

Malone’s many interests led him into various professional ventures. He owned Bushmaster Air with his partner, John (“Johnny Boy”) Haroldson. Backer Steve Cowper provided his Ford Tri-Motor plane to the operation, later coined “The Antique Airlines.”
Malone was certified as a real estate appraiser and worked with Malone and Co. Insurance to provide services for small businesses in rural Alaska. He also developed the only fish hatchery project in Bethel.

In the mid-’90s, Malone worked for the city of Bethel as the city planner and often as acting city manager or police chief. He completed the cost-benefit study that secured funding for the Bethel seawall. After his retirement in 2006, Malone worked for the USDA Rural Development before moving to Anchorage in 2007.

Throughout his work in public safety, Malone developed great compassion for people who suffer from serious mental illness and their families. He became active in the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill. He served as a trustee for the Alaska Mental Health Trust from its inception in 1994 until 2008. The trust paid homage to him as a “pioneer and innovator” shortly before his death.

Additionally, he founded Bethel Community Services Foundation, whose mission is to fund community-based programs in Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta. The BCS Foundation was one of Malone’s proudest achievements.

On his list of favorite things were planes, Winchesters, Porsches and Russian tea samovars. He had done everything at least once and loved to recount these events. Since his recent move to Anchorage, he could be found almost every day at Rob’s shop sharing his stories with the Spenard Safety Bunch and Gail Thomas -  his friends to the end.

Malone was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Paul Malone.
He is survived by his children, John R. Malone, Lorraine Sheridan, Mary Fredericks Binnig, Jason R. Malone and Rosalie J. Malone; his grandchildren, Bethany and Kyle Sheridan, Michael Binnig, Dylan Malone, and Taylor, Paige and Riley Malone; his siblings, Mark Malone, Tom Malone and Alice Erickson.
