The former race manager of the Kuskowkim 300 sled dog race was arrested Tuesday and charged with stealing money from the race committee, according to a written statement from the Bethel Police Department.
Staci J. Gillilan embezzled a “significant amount of money” between March 2, 2007, and March 1 of this year, according to the statement.
Police have charged her with one count each of second-degree and third-degree theft.
Gaming revenues help pay for the annual mid-distance sled dog race that starts and finishes in Bethel. Gillilan had not paid the city of Bethel thousands of dollars in gaming taxes, according to Myron Angstman, acting manager.
Police are encouraging anyone with more information to call the police department at (907) 543-3781.
