Three win Twisted River Film Festival honors

Three winners emerged from the fourth annual Twisted River Festival competition ceremonies in Bethel last week.

With about 75 film buffs on hand for the festival on April 30 at the Yupiit Piciryarait Cultural Center, Logen Bailey won the high school competition with a three-minute film titled "Rune," according to Byron Dull, Housing and Urban Development grant program assistant.

Bailey’s entry topped Eric Typpo’s "Awesome Agent" film entry at the festival, which is sponsored by the cultural center and HUD.

Akram Didari won the adult competition with a five-minute film titled "A Memory of Life in Bethel," according to Dull. He was the only entry in the adult division.

Chris Ho won first place in the professional category with an entry titled "Brains for Computers." Ho competed against three entries from Andrew Allen: "Emperor," "The Surgeon’s Handshake" and "The Caucus System."

Another competitor in the professional category was Mike Martz, who submitted "Alaska Army National Guard Tribute."

There were no entries for the junior high school category, according to Dull.

With a competition deadline of April 25, festival contestants were required to submit entries in DVD or Mini-DVD formats. All films needed to meet a PG rating. Entries were accepted from Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta residents only.

Film themes for this year’s competition included war and peace, friends and enemies, adventure, subsistence and waste, horror or scary-sweet.

All films submitted were screened before presentation at the festival on April 30.
